Shenzhen's Metro network experienced a historic daily ridership peak Dec. 31, with 11 million trips recorded as crowds gathered around the city to celebrate New Year's Eve. This was the first time daily ridership surpassed the 11-million mark.
Data from Shenzhen Metro Group indicate that the city's 18 lines, including the Longhua tram line, achieved a combined passenger throughput of 11.88 million trips. Lines 3, 4, 5, and 11 accounted for a significant portion of this volume.
The convergence of holiday travelers preparing for New Year's Day and commuters on the last working day before the New Year's Day holiday contributed to the surge in ridership, as reported by Shenzhen Metro Group.
The year 2024 marked the 20th anniversary of Shenzhen Metro services. Over the course of the year, the Metro network facilitated more than 3 billion passenger trips, highlighting its critical role in public transportation.
The city's urban rail transit system experienced significant growth during 2024. On March 8, the network set a historic ridership record of 10.26 million passengers on a single day. This record was surpassed July 12, when daily ridership reached 10.30 million, marking another achievement in the system's development.
The opening of five new Metro line sections Dec. 28 has expanded the city's Metro network to 595 kilometers.
