More than 10 speakers shared their insights and explorations at the TEDxShenzhen 2024 annual conference, held at Shenzhen International Garden and Flower Expo Park in Futian District on Sunday.

With the theme of "Brave New World," the speakers from diverse fields, including technology, arts, and humanities, challenged conventional wisdom, engaged in candid dialogue, and shared ideas on pushing boundaries. Each speaker captivated hundreds of attendees, delivering impactful 18-minute talks on a range of topics.

At the conference, Dr. Zhou Yaoqi, a physical biology scientist at Shenzhen Bay Lab in Guangming District, shared how he challenges his own limits in science exploration.

"Don't worry about failure. During my years, I encountered a lot of setbacks throughout my journey from high school to university and professional life. Be patient and creative, you can overcome all those obstacles and achieve the goals," said Zhou, who engages in fundamental research on the structure-function relationships of proteins and RNA.

Dr. Chen Yiwei, promoter of genetics and rare disease science, shared her thoughts on building a warm and fair society that cares about patients born with genetic defects.

"We set up Wonder Sir, an educational platform for rare diseases, through which we provide education for people with rare diseases and help them communicate better with the general public and medical professionals," said Chen, founder of the platform.

"We cannot change our genome, but we can decide how to use our talents to pursue a happy and successful life for ourselves or to help disadvantaged people. I believe that will make our world better and that's the brave way to do so," said Chen.

Maksim Silenko, senior specialist of the HR department of the Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, thought it was interesting to listen to the speakers and learn from their ideas.

Living in the city for six years, Silenko thought the conference was not only about innovation, a calling card of Shenzhen, but also various topics like friendship, collaboration, and charity, showing multiple facets of the city.
