The inaugural ceremony of the Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology (SUAT) was held at its main campus in Guangming District yesterday. This university is an applied research institution established by the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government, based on the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Feng Wei, deputy director-general of the Education Department of Guangdong Province, said at the ceremony that SUAT is focused on fundamental and cutting-edge scientific and technological research. The university seeks to cultivate innovative talent, serve the country's strategic emerging industries, promote the integration of industry and education, and contribute to national economic and social development.
In his speech, Shenzhen Mayor Qin Weizhong stated that SUAT is tasked with exploring new models of research-oriented university education and boosting urban innovation and development.
SUAT is expected to position itself as a top-tier research-oriented university that blends Chinese characteristics with world-class education, providing strong support for Shenzhen's evolution into a globally influential industrial and technological innovation center, the mayor added.
Fan Jianping, founding president of SUAT, highlighted the university's collaborative efforts with Shenzhen for mutual growth and development in his speech.
"As a neighbor, I am very pleased to be here as a representative of research institutions to witness this historical moment," Yan Ning, founding director of the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART), said.
Yan stated that in the future, the two geographically close parties will deepen cooperation in various aspects, such as academic exchange, scientific research collaboration, and talent cultivation.
With over 70% of its faculty being overseas educated, the university boasts 14 academicians. It also has three foreign experts who have received the Chinese Government Friendship Award.
