Although snow and frost are rare in Shenzhen, residents will soon enjoy an indoor ski resort when Huafa Ice and Snow World opens in Qianhai in October next year.

Located in the heart of Qianhai Bay area and adjacent to the Shenzhen World Exhibition and Convention Center, Huafa Ice and Snow World will become the world's largest indoor ice and snow center upon completion. According to the developer, the center will span approximately 100,000 square meters — equivalent to 11 soccer fields — and feature an impressive lift-served vertical drop of 83 meters along with a 441-meter single ski track.

China is already home to the world's three largest indoor snow centers, according to the 2023 World Indoor Snow Centers Guide. The opening of Huafa Ice and Snow World will surpass the current record holder in the northeast Chinese city of Harbin, which opened in 2016.

Once open, the Huafa center will have the capacity to host international ski events organized by the International Ski Federation, establishing it an important base for ice and snow sports. The center will also offer a youth winter games training camp, where both domestic and international champion instructors will train enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Designed by internationally renowned design studio 10Design, the building resembles a blue whale leaping out of the water, symbolizing Shenzhen's vibrant spirit and developmental momentum. Beyond the ski facilities, the center will include themed hotels, shopping facilities, parks, and other recreational and ecological spaces. It is expected to attract around 1 million tourists from around the world each year.

While Shenzhen already has two indoor snow centers, they are less than 10% the size of Huafa Ice and Snow World.

Notably, the facility at the Window of the World theme park was one of the country's first when it opened nearly two decades ago.
