Over the past decade, Shenzhen has enthusiastically engaged in deepening exchanges and collaborations in areas such as infrastructure connectivity, trade facilitation, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds with Belt and Road countries. Since the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was introduced in 2013, Shenzhen has cooperated with BRI partner countries and international organizations to jointly promote green development and combat climate change.

Green technology

The waterways in Bangladesh in South Asia are well-developed for river transportation. However, the country is still a "water-deficient" country, particularly for agricultural irrigation. Fortunately, Bangladesh has abundant solar energy resources, with an average of 300 sunny days each year and an average solar energy utilization rate of about 4.3 to 4.9 kilowatt-hours per square meter.

In 2019, the photovoltaic powered irrigation system provided by Shenzhen Solartech Renewable Energy Co. Ltd. was installed and used for the first time in Bangladesh. Green innovative technologies and experts from Shenzhen have effectively converted the ample sunlight and water resources in Bangladesh into a sustainable and stable power source, promoting the local application of photovoltaic and water conservation projects and receiving positive feedback from users.

The project has become another example of Shenzhen's green technologies benefiting the people of BRI partner countries.

Green platform

The Belt and Road Environmental Technology Exchange and Transfer Center (Shenzhen) (B&RETTC), sponsored by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, is China's first national-level platform serving the green development of the BRI.

An innovation platform for the development of low-carbon technology innovation, the center aims to boost international cooperation in environmental protection by providing effective support for green development, green international standards, and green industry development.

Since the idea to build a green Silk Road was proposed in 2016, B&RETTC took the opportunity to spread green concepts.

It has cooperated with Shenzhen Energy Environment Engineering Co. Ltd. to provide consulting services, technical guidance, and training for Bangladesh's Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant and compiled an operational guide for the plant’s sludge incineration system.

With the center's support, the sewage treatment plant reduced environmental pollution and improved the quality of its day-to-day operation and management.

In Kenya, B&RETTC supported collaboration between Shenzhen Solar Run Energy Co. Ltd. and the Kenya-based Mama Layla company to implement a solar energy education project. The project saw villagers learn professional skills by watching videos on a media machine and aimed to help impoverished locals increase their income and improve their lives.

At present, B&RETTC has set up eight overseas bases.

Green conference

The BRI Green Innovation Conference 2023 was held in Shenzhen last August.

The conference attracted more than 600 attendees from over 20 countries. Experts and scholars shared cutting-edge green and low-carbon technology, and business representatives exchanged green innovation practices and promoted more green cooperation.

The conference serves as a platform for sharing China's ecological civilization and green development concepts, practices, and achievements. It facilitates technology exchanges and project collaborations and aims to promote green technologies and projects among the countries and regions participating in the BRI.

Green story video contest

Winners of the Second BRI Green Development Stories Short Video Contest were unveiled during a ceremony held in Shenzhen in December of last year.

The contest invited government departments, institutions, enterprises, and individuals from BRI countries and regions to share green development stories through video. It received over 500 entries from more than 20 countries.

A video titled "Empower You More,"created by Shenzhen Xiangyang New Energy Technology Co. Ltd., won first place in the contest. The video shared the company's excellent track record of using clean energy technologies to help African countries alleviate poverty and achieve green development.
