The Shenzhen-produced dance drama "Wing Chun" made its highly anticipated "homecoming" to the Shenzhen Poly Theater on Wednesday night, with seven performances scheduled until Sunday.
The performance drew a crowd of enthusiasts and notable figures, including two-time Oscar winner and four-time Academy Award-nominated director Malcolm Clarke.
Clarke, who watched the drama, expressed his admiration for the performance, saying, "I'm overwhelmed by what I saw because I had no idea it was going to be so spectacular and professional. The choreography was perfect, the drama was extremely well thought-out, and the music was excellent."
The renowned British director was particularly impressed with the composer's work, labeling it as "first-class," and expressed a desire to film the performance and showcase it in London.
Clarke believes that China's ability to produce world-class art, such as "Wing Chun," is something the nation should be immensely proud of. "This is a perfect example of China's world-class choreography and art. Technically, it's a world-class piece of work," Clarke said.
The director's enthusiasm for the production was so profound that he plans to purchase tickets for his daughter and her friends in London, as well as recommend the show to his friends in the film community.
"It's really breathtakingly good," Clarke said.
"Wing Chun" continues to solidify its reputation as a world-class production with its exceptional storytelling, awe-inspiring choreography, and outstanding music, having captivated audiences across China and in Singapore with over 180 shows. "Wing Chun" made its debut at the Shenzhen Poly Theater in December 2022.
Following the performances in Shenzhen, the dance drama will embark on an international journey as part of the "Shenzhen Stories" Initiative for Global City Civilizations Exchange. With 12 performances scheduled at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, the U.K., from Aug. 30 to Sept. 7, "Wing Chun" will then grace stages in France and Russia.
