A talent show specially organized for expatriates teaching in Bao’an District was held Wednesday. Expat teachers from diverse cultural backgrounds won cheers and applause with their performances.
The talent show, organized by the district’s education bureau, was held at Shenzhen Bao’an Xiaode School, attracting 11 teams to participate. All of the performers are teachers at public schools and kindergartens in Bao’an District.
The expat teachers staged solo and choral singing, dance and drama performances, and played music instruments.
Oleksii Usachov and Oleksandra Usachova, a couple from Ukraine, won the top prize by performing an ethereal song named “Spring,” with the wife singing and the husband playing guitar.
Another teacher identified as David from Shanghe Primary School performed a song called “Summer of 69,” winning rounds of cheers with his baritone voice. Shane Halligan, Andrew Dyl, Celia and Chai Lijuan performed their original song “Lyra” as a band, igniting the atmosphere both on and off the stage.
Besides singing, some expatriate teachers also showcased their talent for playing music instruments. Javier Mondragon from Luozu Primary School played a Hulusi, a Chinese wind instrument made out of a gourd, with his Chinese colleague Yang Fang. They both were wearing the clothes of a Chinese minority ethnic group.
Teachers from Bihai Primary School identified as Ivan and from Xin’an Middle School Group named Konstantin gave a piano performance, while Varela Del impressed the audience with the song “Venezuela” played on electric guitar. Another teacher from the Xin’an school, Lukas Unwin, soloed on drums and won the second prize.
Dance performances were also highlights of the talent show. Anhelina Cherep from Tangtou School performed a contemporary dance called “Promise.” A Mexican teacher named Nidia Pena stunned the judges and audience with a traditional dance called “Mexican Soule,” which also won her the second prize.
Two expatriate teachers from Shenzhen Mingde Experimental School, Brandy Elizabeth and David Pay, delivered a segment of the classic play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
