Shenzhen has reached a milestone in its efforts to conserve its ancient trees by installing state-of-the-art surveillance systems, dubbed "Sky Eyes," on all first-class ancient trees, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

Shenzhen has completed its first comprehensive survey of ancient tree resources citywide, the Daily report said. The survey lists a total of 1,714 registered ancient trees and famous specimens, including 14 first-class, 63 second-class, and 1,632 third-class ancient trees, as well as five famous specimens.

With a firm commitment to integrating technology into conservation endeavors, Shenzhen has leveraged advanced tools such as remote sensing and Geographic Information System to monitor and manage the growth and environmental conditions affecting these ancient trees. Establishment of an integration platform allows for mapping the spatial data of ancient trees and the automatic verification of construction projects to ensure these natural treasures are not disturbed.

Moreover, all first-class ancient trees and famous specimens in Shenzhen are now under the watchful eye of "Sky Eyes" that provide round-the-clock video surveillance and traceable protection. The measure safeguards the well-being of these ancient trees, with over 85% currently exhibiting a healthy growth trajectory.

Complementing technological advancements, Shenzhen has implemented spatial control measures to maximize on-site protection. For example, protection zones that extend five meters beyond the vertical projection line of a tree's canopy have been enacted. These zones are strictly enforced, which necessitates that all construction projects adapt their plans accordingly.

Shenzhen is also at the forefront of promoting the establishment of "Green and Beautiful Guangdong" demonstration sites, including two ancient tree villages and one ancient tree park.

Shenzhen's commitment to ancient tree conservation has garnered well-deserved recognition. The ancient tree cluster in Baguang, Dapeng New Area, distinguished for its pristine ancient looking-glass mangroves, was honored as one of the "100 Most Beautiful Ancient Tree Clusters" nationwide in 2023.
