Established in 1989, the Wutong Mountain Scenic Area was rated as a provincial scenic area in 1993 and a national scenic area by the State Council in 2009. Straddling Luohu, Yantian and Longgang districts, it covers an area of 42.04 square kilometers.
Wutong Mountain has a long and well-known history. The Wutong Yanyun (Wutong Clouds) was recognized as among the Top Eight Sceneries of Shenzhen in 2004.
Wutong Mountain has three main peaks, Xiaowutong, Doufutou and Dawutong. Among them, Dawutong ranks the highest with an altitude of 943.7 meters.
The forest coverage rate of Wutong Mountain is 88.6%, and the vast vegetation constitutes an important ecological barrier of Shenzhen, which is vividly referred to as the lung of Shenzhen.
With the change of seasons, a sea of flowers can be found here, appealing to countless tourists.
In March every year, the Rhododendron moulmainense is in its full blossom. You can view this spectacular and rare landscape in the area between Xiaowutong and Wanhuaping.
The Wutong Mountain Scenic Area boasts gorgeous natural and cultural landscapes. The main scenic spots include Fenggu Mingqin, Wutong Yanyun, Xiantong and Xikeng.
Wutong Mountain Nature School was established in March 2016 and more than 50 themed public welfare activities have been held every year, including field trips, crafting experiences, outdoor safety, bird watching, night watching and many others. North Gate Archway: Located at the northern foot of the Fenggu Mingqin Scenic Spot, it was officially opened to the public in October 2007.
Taishan Stream: As a collection of 14 mountain streams, it is situated in the Wutong Yanyun Scenic Spot.
Castanopsis Fissa Landscape: Wutong Mountain abounds with forests of Castanopsis fissa trees and the best viewing time is from March to April every year.
Flower Viewing Platform: Here you can view the magnificent landscape of Handroanthus chrysanthus.
Pyrus Calleryana Viewing Platform: Shenzhen is home to Pyrus calleryana (Callery pear). Here you can view the magnificent landscape of white flowers and the best viewing time is from March to April every year.
Fenghuangtai (Phoenix Terrace): It is located at the intersection of the roads leading to Dawutong and Xiaowutong respectively. It covers an area of 750 square meters and has two levels, the upper level with a view pavilion providing visitors both a place to view the landscape and a place to rest.
Wanhuaping (Flowers Screen): Here you can view the magnificent landscape of Rhododendron moulmainense at Wanhuaping from February to March every year.
Wutong Chahai (Sea of Camellia at Wutong Mountain): The camellia is an ornamental flower renowned around the world, as well as one of China's top 10 flowers. In Wutong Mountain, a lush and colorful landscape of camellias welcomes tourists from all over the world.
Yitian Zhaofeng Pavilion (Pavilion of Inviting Phoenixes): It is situated on the southwest side of the main peak Xiaowutong that has an altitude of 692 meters above sea level. It lies at the best location to overlook the New Territories of Hong Kong, Dapeng Bay, Shenzhen Bay and Lingdingyang.
Haohanpo (Hero Slope): Located at the mountainside of Wutong Mountain, Haohanpo is in the area of Wutong Clouds Scenic Spot. It is a starting point to reach the summit of Dawutong. With a length of 1,100 meters, the trail has a steep slope and is a challenging climb for tourists.
No.1 Peak of Roc City: Dawutong, which is the main peak of Wutong Mountain, clocks in at 943.7 meters above sea level. It is the highest peak in Shenzhen.
Tianchi (Heavenly Pond): In the Ming Dynasty, Tianchi was known as one of the Top Eight Sceneries of Xin'an. Tianchi nowadays is manually excavated according to legends.
Xiaowutong Square: As a must-see featured attraction, Xiaowutong is the third-highest peak of Wutong Mountain. You can see the landmark of Wutong Mountain -- Shenzhen TV Tower at Xiaowutong Square.
Rhododendron Valley: It is located to the north of Xiaowutong Square and has an altitude of 500 meters above sea level, with an area of more than 0.2 square kilometers, and boasts rich natural resources.
Dujuan Tihong (Ridge of Rhododendron Flowers): Located within the Doufutou Scenic Spot, Dujuan Tihong covers an area of more than 0.2 square kilometers. Rhododendron grows along both sides of the ridge, presenting a colorful and dazzling sea of flowers, especially in March.
Juanping Yingbin (Rhododendron Flowers Greeting Visitors): The scenic spot lies on Haohan Road, which has a length of 1,800 meters. Along the road is a flower wall consisting of Rhododendron latoucheae and Rhododendron x pulchrum among others.
Chunjuan Jinxiu (Splendid Rhododendrons in Spring): It is located between Xiaowutong Square and the Xiaowutong TV Tower, with an area of 8,200 square meters. Here tourists can admire the colorful and splendid rhododendrons.
Xiajuan Tuyan (Gorgeous Rhododendrons in Summer): Situated in the long corridor of Yitian Zhaofeng Pavilion, this attraction covers an area of 2,300 square meters. More than 3,000 rhododendrons of 30 different species are planted here.
Dongjuan Zhijin (Tapestry of Rhododendron Flowers): Located at Xiaowutong's camellia path, it covers an area of about 4,500 square meters. A total of more than 13,000 rhododendrons are planted here, representing more than 60 species of rhododendrons.
