Visitors wait in line to board the Robobus, a self-driving sightseeing vehicle, at Lianhua Hill Park in Futian District yesterday. Parkgoers can experience the Robobus without an appointment through Dec. 31, according to the park. The unmanned vehicle traverses a 450-meter route in eight minutes. The Robobus can accommodate up to six passengers and is an L4-level autonomous vehicle, meaning it operates without a human driver as backup.
An autonomous minibus, recently making its rounds in the Lianhua Hill Park in Futian District, has caught the attention of parkgoers due to its unique design.
Unlike traditional buses, it has no front or rear, does not have a steering wheel, brakes or rearview mirrors. Instead, its navigation solely relies on advanced sensors, such as LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar, and cameras, empowering it to handle a variety of complex road situations.
This Robobus, developed by PIX Moving, is currently operating as a sightseeing shuttle on a trial basis, offering free transport services between the Lurong Road Memorial Park near the south entrance of the Lianhua Hill Park and Yulin Xigu.
The Robobus can accommodate up to six passengers and is an L4-level autonomous vehicle, meaning it operates without a human driver as backup.
Currently, the Robobus is primarily deployed in urban last-mile transportation scenarios, covering distances typically ranging from 3 to 5 kilometers. It is also suitable for use in enclosed environments, such as smart connected demonstration zones, parks and other tourist attractions, industrial parks, and airports.
The Robobus is offering free rides in Lianhua Hill Park through Dec. 31. The journey usually takes eight minutes to cover a distance of 450 meters between the Lurong Road Memorial Park and Yulin Xigu. Free rides are available from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, the service is limited to between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Shuttle services will be suspended in adverse weather conditions, such as rainstorms.
Passengers are required to fasten their seat belts while onboard the Robobus. Seniors and children must be accompanied by an adult. No reservations are needed to ride the Robobus in the park.
In addition to the autonomous minibus, an unmanned retail vehicle in the Lianhua Hill Park has also garnered local media attention. The Robo-Shop, also developed by PIX Moving, offers seasonal flavor of Dorayakis, attracting a large number of customers. The retail vehicle is stationed near Jingui and Lanying roads during weekdays, and in the Kite-flying Square during weekends.
