Q:
Q: Do I need medical insurance? 08-11
A:
A: The costs for medical care in China are generally significantly lower than the West. Nonetheless, serious illness, hospitalizations, surgery, trauma, and other such events can be expensive. It is therefore wise to obtain medical insurance to cover these costs, remembering the pay-first system. For hospitalizations, a deposit of several thousand yuan is required; additionally, before you can be discharged, you have to pay all the bills in full. If you have medical insurance, most hospitals still require you to pay out of your own pocket first after which you can get reimbursed by the insurance company.
