Vienne is located in the central-western part of France, 340 kilometers from Paris. It is a department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The department primarily consists of areas that were part of the former department of Poitou, Touraine, parts of Berry, and Anjou. The capital of the department is the city of Poitiers.
It became a sister city of Shenzhen on Oct. 28, 1994.
