Almaty is located in southeastern Kazakhstan, at the foothills of the Zailiysky Alatau mountains, in a hilly area that makes it one of the few high-altitude cities in the world. Established in 1854, Almaty is one of the cities directly under the jurisdiction of Kazakhstan. It served as an important stop on the ancient Silk Road that connected China to Central Asia. The region is famous for its abundant apple production, which is why it was named "Almaty," meaning "Father of Apples."  It became a friendship city of Shenzhen on Dec. 29, 2021.
