Shenzhen's total output value of industrial enterprises above designated size jumped from 2 trillion yuan (US$297 billion) in 2011 to over 4.1 trillion yuan in 2021, ranking the first among the country’s large and medium cities.

The growth over the past 10 years has thus made Shenzhen the country’s first industrial city, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

Shenzhen’s industrial added value, an important economic indicator, exceeded 1 trillion yuan last year, up by 5% year on year. The city has ranked first among the country’s large and medium cities for three straight years in terms of its total output value of industrial enterprises above designated size.

With a solid manufacturing foundation, Shenzhen is home to not only large companies such as Huawei and TCL CSOT but also many small- and medium-sized enterprises such as Mindray, DJI and Han’s Laser.

Last year, the added value of manufacturing accounted for over 30% of the city’s GDP, higher than the national average, of which over 70% came from advanced manufacturing, specifically high-tech manufacturing.

The total profit of industrial enterprises above designated size increased by 23.7% for the whole year.

In addition, Shenzhen added 1,769 industrial enterprises above designated size, 134 “little giant” companies and 19 leading enterprises in China’s manufacturing industry.

The city also promoted stable industrial development and upgrading. Shenzhen was approved to build the national 5G medium- and high-frequency device innovation center and was among the first batch of service-oriented manufacturing demonstration cities in China.

Four clusters were selected as the winners during the finals of the advanced manufacturing cluster competition organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, ranking first in the country.

A group of key projects from industrial giants such as the China Electronics Corporation (CEC) headquarters project and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) chip production line project also revitalized the city’s manufacturing.

Shenzhen has planned 883 key projects for this year, including 250 for modern industry, with a total investment of over 1 trillion yuan.

Recently, Shenzhen issued guidelines on developing 20 globally competitive strategic emerging industrial clusters and eight future industries.
