Fan Jianping, president of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, believed that the introduction and implementation of Shenzhen’s guidelines on developing strategic emerging industrial clusters and fostering future industries is expected to further consolidate the status of Shenzhen as a “city of innovation.”
“The guidelines are greatly significant for Shenzhen to speed up the construction of a globally influential highland of technological and industrial innovation,” Fan remarked in an interview with Nanfang Plus recently.
Shenzhen issued guidelines on developing 20 globally competitive strategic emerging industrial clusters and fostering eight future industries Monday, another major move of the city to boost scientific research, technological innovation and industrial development.
According to Fan, the policy not only reflects Shenzhen’s existing industrial foundation and development direction of future industries, but also the progress in the layout of scientific research institutions and educational institutions in Shenzhen in recent years.
Fan said, for example, industries such as synthetic biology that have been highlighted over the last few years have made steady headway and are expected to achieve rapid growth in the future.
In his view, the guidelines have demonstrated Shenzhen’s missions and responsibilities in terms of making breakthroughs in key and core technologies and lay particular emphasis to different industries.
In addition, he believed that a high degree of marketization is a key factor in Shenzhen’s rise, and that there is a greater role that market plays in the development of smartphones and other industries. It is also critical for the government to play a better guiding role in optimizing the business environment.
“In cutting-edge fields such as synthetic biology and brain science, Shenzhen retains its pioneering spirit and is enterprising,” Fan said, adding that Shenzhen has sent a clear signal to the young people worldwide who are interested in the development of relevant strategic emerging and future industries.
Fan believed that new unicorn companies will undoubtedly rise up in these industries and that more young people will come to Shenzhen and create greater value with their own diligence and intelligence.
