Online shopping festival rakes in sales over ¥5B

The fourth online shopping festival generated more than 5 billion yuan (US$740.7 million) in online sales in Shenzhen, with 90% of transactions for physical commodities, the city’s commerce bureau said yesterday.


Over the 15-day promotional campaign that started April 28, Shenzhen’s key e-commerce platforms that participated in the program reported over 40 million orders, with the total transactions exceeding 3.7 billion yuan and 95% of consumers giving positive reviews.


Among them, the sales volume of JD.com’s Jingxi app was up 110% quarter on quarter and 50% year on year. Meituan’s Youyuan and Rainbow apps’ sales were up by 40% and 10% year on year, respectively.


The online shopping festival, jointly launched by the Ministry of Commerce and other government agencies, is a nationwide campaign designed to boost quality consumption.


This year, a total of 12 reputable e-commerce platforms took part in Shenzhen’s regional campaign. Over 25,000 e-retail businesses, including several of Shenzhen’s local brands, offered high-quality commodities and services during the shopping festival.


The platforms’ statistics showed that the best-selling goods were food and fresh produce, outdoor clothing and accessories, beauty and personal care items, household appliances, houseware, apparel and bags, and other seasonal goods.


The top three physical commodity categories by orders were daily necessities, clothing, shoes, hats and knitted goods, as well as communications equipment.


As part of the shopping festival, fresh fruits and imported African products were sold via the Pagoda and Tudigong apps. These agricultural goods were also welcomed by the city’s consumers, playing a key role in boosting local consumption.


In another move to boost local consumption during challenging times, Shenzhen government has given e-vouchers with a total value of 500 million yuan starting April 28.
