A train carrying toys departed from a yard in Longchuan, in the city of Heyuan, Guangdong Province, and headed to Yantian Port on Tuesday, marking the official operation of the ninth inland port under Shenzhen Port’s sea-rail mode.

The 21,200-square-meter yard in Longchuan, a sub-regional center in the city of Heyuan, can accommodate 2,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). Under the sea-rail transportation mode, exporters in Longchuan can load their commodities into Shenzhen Port’s shipping containers and send them directly to Shenzhen for sailing abroad.

Under this mode, Shenzhen has established port cooperation with nine inland cities in Guangdong, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces.

In 2021, throughput under the sea-rail operation mode reached 227,400 TEUs, up by 25% year on year. Between January and April, exports under this mode reached 40,000 TEUs, up by 96%, data from Shenzhen transport commission showed.

Earlier this year, Yantian Port’s multimodal container transportation linking the Asia-Pacific region, the whole Pearl River Delta area and European countries won the title of national multimodal transportation demonstration program in China.

In another development, Sino-Europe trains have handled a total of 109,000 tons of freight valued at 5 billion yuan (US$743.16 million), with 189 trains operating since it was first introduced in August 2020. Since January, the city has operated 41 Sino-Europe trains, up by 51.9% year on year, data from Shenzhen Customs showed.
