‘Circle Theater Day’ in Pingshan

To mark the first anniversary of the opening of the Pingshan Theater, a series of shows will be held at the “Circle Theater Day” event Oct. 25. Tickets to the Chinese play “And Then There Were None” can be purchased on the theater’s official WeChat account “PingShanTheatre” and later the theater will announce the sign-up and ticketing information of other events on the WeChat account.


Modern dance


Six dancers from the Pingshan Dancers’ Association will present a modern dance themed “life.”

Kunqu ‘The Chairs’


The Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe will present a Kunqu opera version of Eugène Ionesco’s “The Chairs,” an absurdist “tragic farce” play written in 1952. The play concerns two characters, known as Old Man and Old Woman, who are frantically preparing chairs for a series of invisible guests who are coming to hear an orator reveal the Old Man’s discovery. Kunqu is one of the oldest extant forms of Chinese opera. It evolved from the local melodies of Kunshan in Jiangsu Province, and subsequently came to dominate Chinese theater from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It has been listed as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2001.

Play ‘My Way’


The Guangzhou theater troupe SBT will present a short play centering on an office employee who has a fantasy that all of the colleagues have become aquatic animals.

Workshop


He Yufan, a director and actor of Beijing’s Drum Tower West Theater, will give a workshop on drama tension.

Play-reading


Scriptwriter Shi Hang will lead a play-reading event together with Drum Tower West Theater actors.

Screening ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’


A feuding fairy king and queen of the forest cross paths with four runaway lovers and a troupe of actors trying to rehearse a play. As their dispute grows, the magical royal couple meddles with mortal lives leading to love triangles, mistaken identities and transformations with hilarious, but dark consequences. This performance of Shakespeare’s most famous romantic comedy is in English.

Screening ‘As You Like It’


After the overthrowing of Duke Senior by his tyrannical brother, Senior’s daughter Rosalind disguises herself as a man and sets out to find her banished father while also counseling her clumsy suitor Orlando in the art of wooing. The screening is in English.

Chinese play ‘And Then There Were None’


The Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center will present Chinese suspense drama “And Then There Were None” based on Agatha Christie’s classic novel of the same name. Ten strangers are invited to a private villa on an Indian island by the rich Mr. Owen. After dinner, a mysterious voice reveals terrible secrets hidden in the minds of the guests. In that night, the young Mr. Marston dies mysteriously, the ancient nursery rhyme hangs over all the people like a curse, a pair of mysterious eyes seems to be watching the death game, and visitors are just like the 10 small Indian porcelain figurines on a table which mysteriously disappear one after another, approaching death another and yet another.
