The Spanish Ballet of Cuba will bring to life the classic tale of “The Phantom of the Opera” in a flamenco version at Pingshan Theater on Thursday.

“The Phantom of the Opera” is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux published in installments in a magazine from 1909 to 1910.

The novel, which centers on a young soprano who becomes the obsession of a disfigured and murderous musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House, is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera House during the 19th century. It has been successfully adapted into various stage and film adaptations, the most notable of which is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical.

Led by Cuban prime dancer and choreographer Eduardo Veitia, the Spanish Ballet of Cuba was founded in 1987. At first, the creative group was named “Spanish Ballet of Havana” and by the end of 2000, due to the prestige reached in both the teaching and its artistic interpretation, it was renamed the Spanish Ballet of Cuba.

Through three decades of intensity and dedication, the Spanish Ballet of Cuba has been recognized as the greatest of its kind in the country. The ballet has created its own style, based on a deep respect for and a serious attitude toward the technical and choreographic aspects of the Spanish dance panorama.

Its repertoire ranges from classic to flamenco fusion, using highly recognized works from around the globe. This remarkable company has had presentations in various European and American stages, where it has received public recognition and the praise of critics across the world.
