“Variations on a Rococo Theme” for cello and orchestra was inspired by Mozart, Tchaikovsky’s role model, and makes it clear that Tchaikovsky admired the Classical period style very much. Wieniawski’s second violin concerto remains one of the greatest violin concertos of the Romantic era, memorable for its lush and moving melodies and harmonies. Shostakovich’s “Violin Concerto No. 1” is not only a major individual accomplishment but also a major contributor to the violin concerto in its four-movement form.
