Dang Thai Son to give concert, master class in June| June 8-9

Vietnamese-Canadian classical pianist Dang Thai Son will present six of Debussy’s “Preludes,” Schubert’s “Piano Sonata in C Major” and Chopin’s “Barcarolle, Op. 60,” “Bolero, Op. 19,” “Rondo a la Mazur, Op. 5,” “Ballade No. 1, Op. 23” and three waltzes at Shenzhen Concert Hall on June 9.

Before the concert, he will give a master class on how to play Chopin’s pieces June 8.

The master class will be in English with Chinese interpretation. Piano students who would like to be instructed at the class should submit an application form (download from http://old.szyyt.com/index.php/Perform/view/id/2379) and a six-minute video playing a Chopin’s piece to program@szyyt.com by May 20.

Dang will select two students, who will later pay a sum of fees to attend the class. Call Shenzhen Concert Hall (0755-82841833) for fee information.

The master class is also open to the public and audience members can purchase tickets to watch it.

Dang was the Gold Medalist of the 10th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland in 1980. He has received particular acclaim for the sonority and poetry in his interpretations of music of Chopin and the French repertoire.

Dang began studying the piano in Hanoi with his mother, then a professor at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. He was discovered by a Russian pianist, Isaac Katz, on a visit to Vietnam in 1974. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory in Russia.

He was a visiting professor at the Kunitachi Music College in Japan and has taught at the Universite de Montreal in Canada. Starting in September 2018, Dang is joining the piano faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Canada. Dang was the winner of the Prix Opus in the 2016 “Concert of the Year” category for his concert at the Musee de Beaux Arts’ Bourgie Hall in Montreal. He can be heard on Deutsche Grammophon, Melodya, Polskie Nagrania, CBS Sony, Victor JVC, Analekta, and the Fryderyk Chopin Institute recording labels. Two recording projects were released in 2017. The first one is a Schubert recording with Victor Kenwood Japan, a company that Dang has worked with since 1995. The second recording is devoted to Paderewski’s compositions.
