Chinese saxophonist Li Gaoyang will collaborate with Italian pianist Antonio Farao, Chinese bassist Hu Hao and U.S. drummer Adam Nussbaum for a night of jazz.
Nussbaum studied music at the City College of New York, during which time he also played in local clubs. In 1978 he joined Dave Liebman’s quintet and did his first European tour with John Scofield. In 1983 he became a member of the Gil Evans Orchestra. He later joined the Eliane Elias/Randy Brecker Quartet, Gary Burton, and Toots Thielemans. Nussbaum has kept active in a wide variety of groups and as a freelancer. His recording debut as leader was in 2018, with The Lead Belly Project.
Farao attended the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan where he earned an intermediate degree in 1983. He won the X1 Music Review’s New Talent Prize in 1987. He won several other international competitions before his debut album in 1999. He followed it up with a second album in 2001. He is known for combining Mediterranean and African-American influences.
Li is China’s most renowned jazz saxophonist. An energetic band leader and prolific composer, he has studied with many master musicians like George Garzone and Jerry Bergonzi. Li inarguably represents the highest standard of jazz saxophone in China. His recording “East Meets West” was recorded in Denmark and also features Bergonzi.
