Simon Rattle

Simon Rattle, music director of London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), will lead his orchestra in Shenzhen for a night of Brahms’ pieces. Pianist Emanuel Ax will collaborate with the orchestra to play “Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 83” and then the orchestra will present “Symphony No. 2, Op. 73.”

Rattle rose to international prominence during the 1980s and 1990s while serving as music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (1980-1998). He has been principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic and now is music director of the London Symphony Orchestra since 2017.

Rattle has conducted a wide variety of music, but he is best known for his interpretations of late 19th- and early 20th-century composers such as Mahler, with a recording of Mahler’s “Symphony No. 2” winning several awards on its release.

His recording of Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem” with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra received the Choral Performance Grammy Award in 2008. He has won two other Grammy Awards: Choral Performance Award for a recording of Stravinsky’s “Symphony of Psalms” in 2007 and Best Orchestral Performance for a recording of Mahler’s unfinished “Symphony No. 10” in 2000.

Emanuel Ax

Ax was born to a Polish-Jewish family in Ukraine. He has studied at the Juilliard School in the United States and holds honorary doctorates of music from Yale University and Columbia University.

The London Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1904, is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in London. The orchestra claims to be the world’s most recorded orchestra. It has made gramophone recordings since 1912 and has played on more than 200 soundtrack recordings for movies, of which the best known include the “Star Wars” series.
