Distinguished violinist Lyu Siqing will collaborate with pianist Cheng Wai to perform Dvorak’s “Sonatina Op. 100,” Franck’s “Sonata for Piano and Violin” and “The Butterfly Lovers” by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao.
When Lyu was 11, he was invited by Yehudi Menuhin to study in London and was subsequently a junior prizewinner in the inaugural Menuhin Competition in 1983. In 1984 he returned to China and five years later went to the Juilliard School in the United States. In 1987 he was the first Asian violinist to win first prize at the Paganini Competition in Italy.
His interpretation of “The Butterfly Lovers” violin concerto is widely considered the best and has sold well over a million copies worldwide.
Cheng is a winner of the Hong Kong Young Music Performer Award of the International Year of Youth and received a Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award in 2009. She is also a Steinway Artist.
She has studied at Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, obtaining her B.A. from the Curtis Institute of Music in the United States, M.A. in Yale University and doctoral degree from New York State University. She is now the chairwoman of the Central Conservatory of Music (HK) Foundation and currently teaches at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and has also adjudicated in numerous local and international competitions.
