Since 2012, OCT-LOFT has regularly held “One and One” lectures, inviting designers to share their ideas.

In the course of Shenzhen’s development for the past 40 years, designers and artists have been playing a role of increasing importance to the city’s urbanization and art development.

In the current season of “One and One,” the organizers have invited four pairs of artists and designers/architects to ask each other questions on creation, inspiration and more. Last Thursday, in the first session of this season, architect/designer Liu Heng and artist Xue Feng shared their thoughts.

Liu, founder and principal architect of Nansha Original DEsign (NODE) in Guangzhou, who designed the popular Wedding Hall in Xiangmihu Park in Shenzhen and has conducted numerous urban designs in China, said that she has observed in the era of social media and in her own high-density life that fragmented time and trivia in projects can provide inspiration or relieve pressure as long as you can manage your time efficiently. She also noted that as a designer, most of her inspiration comes when she is alone, so as a Guangzhou native, she moved to Shenzhen, where nobody knows her.

Having been an architect for more than 15 years, Liu said that cities are changing and complicated but when a new project comes, she still sticks to some fundamental design principles and methods. “Changes bring us passion and for different projects, our solutions fit different places, but an architect’s style is still the same,” she said.

Painter Xue spoke to his thoughts on crossover since some artists are participating in architecture projects. “I believe art is a complimentary part of architecture because their forms and structures are different, and doing crossover is very dangerous. Art deals with visual expression while structures and materials should be considered in architecture,” said Xue.

Three more upcoming talks will be held this week: artist Li Liao and graphic designer Huang Yang (tomorrow), artist Liang Quan and architect Zhang Yuxing (Wednesday), and artist Zhou Li and architect Liu Xiaodu (Thursday).
