Original “One Hundred Horses” painted by Castiglione.
Interactive “One Hundred Horses.”
The exhibition “A Wonderland of Giuseppe Castiglione and Fantastic Beasts” is being held at Eslite Spectrum Shenzhen in MixC World in Nanshan District.
The interactive exhibition uses famous paintings by Castiglione (1688-1766), such as “The Ten Prized Dogs” and “One Hundred Horses,” as some scenes.
Castiglione was an Italian missionary in China, where he served as an artist at the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) imperial court for the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors. He painted various subjects in a style that is a fusion of European and Chinese traditions. His work includes portraits of the emperors and empresses and subjects like horses, dogs, monkeys and deer.
Visitors can interact with the paintings in the exhibition.
In addition to his skills as a painter, he was also in charge of designing the Western-style palaces in the imperial gardens of the Old Summer Palace.
A music box at the exhibition is inspired by the 12 bronze Chinese zodiac statue clocks designed by Castiglione in the Old Summer Palace. The statues would spout water to tell the time.
