French lyrical ensemble Opera Fuoco will present Handel’s musical dramas and opera serias this weekend at Pingshan Theater. Audience members can follow Pingshan Theater’s WeChat by searching “坪山大剧院” to buy tickets and look up more upcoming shows.
On Saturday, the troupe will sing pieces from “Hercules,” “Semele,” “Alcina,” “Serse” and “Giulio Cesare,” and on Sunday, they will perform “Serse.”
Serse, the king of Persia, resolves to marry Romilda. However, Romilda is also loved by Arsamene — the brother of Serse. Meanwhile, Atalanta is in love with Arsamente. Amastre, Serse’s fiancee whom he has abandoned, disguises herself as a man and seeks revenge. Atalanta’s pretense that Arsamene really loves her and the insistence of Serse on marrying Romilda cause a series of complications, enlivened by the comic servant Elviro. Eventually, all is resolved when Serse reunites with Amastre and Arsamene reunites with Romilda.
George Frideric Handel
George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) is well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems and organ concertos. He was strongly influenced both by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition.
Opera Fuoco dedicates itself to the interpretation of operatic repertoire from the beginning of the 18th to the end of the 19th centuries. Consisting of an orchestra playing on period instruments, Opera Fuoco works alongside young professional singers. Its conductor David Stern strongly believes in bringing operatic repertoire to new audiences and particularly in making opera more accessible to children.
