Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport is expanding its cargo routes to key regions worldwide, including South America, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as major cities in countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiate. The expansion aims to promote Shenzhen products and brands overseas.
The opening of more international cargo routes is intended to meet the demand of leading logistics companies seeking to expand their global networks.
At a news conference focused on transforming Shenzhen into a globally influential logistics hub Thursday, Ying Xuemin, chairman of Shenzhen Airport Logistics Development Co. Ltd., said that the airport had initiated the construction of eight logistics projects with a total investment of 5 billion yuan (US$704 million).
Over half of the projects have been completed and delivered, Ying said. This year, key projects such as SF Express Phase II and the new express parcel center will also be completed. By 2025, the annual cargo and mail handling capacity of the Shenzhen airport is expected to increase by nearly 1.6 million tons.
The Shenzhen airport now has 60 domestic and international cargo route destinations that cover major global air cargo hubs such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Frankfurt, Paris, London, Liege, and Budapest.
According to Cai Xin, deputy chief of the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau, the added value of Shenzhen's logistics industry reached 352 billion yuan in 2023, accounting for 10.18% of the city's GDP.
In 2023, Shenzhen Port's international container shipping routes connected to more than 300 ports in over 100 countries and regions. It has maintained its position as the world's fourth-largest container port for 10 consecutive years.
